In March of 2013, the United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that will ultimately determine the constitutionality of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). DOMA states that the word "marriage," as used in any federal law or regulation, means only a union of a man and a woman. This includes laws that govern veterans' benefits, tax adjustments, Social Security, and many other benefits.
After initially defending DOMA in court, the Justice Department (DOJ) recently announced that it would not defend DOMA due to the Obama administration's belief that DOMA is unconstitutional. And yesterday, DOJ submitted a brief urging the court to overturn DOMA.
Despite a majority of Americans now supporting marriage equality, Republican House leader John Boehner has ordered the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group of the United States House of Representatives (BLAG) to provide a defense of DOMA.

YOUR PETITION LETTER: |
|
|
TO: President Obama, Senators, and Representatives
FROM: (Your Name and Email)
SUBJECT: Equal Marriage Rights
Dear President Obama, Senators, and Representatives:
(Your message here)
During the 2012 Presidential campaign President Obama made several statements in support of equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian partners.
Many gay and lesbian voters campaigned hard for him after he made good on his promise to make an effort to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Right now 10 US States plus the District of Columbia recognize legal marriage for all citizens, gay or straight. It is time for the Federal Government to do the same.
America stands for the principals of justice and equality and all Americans deserve the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Gay and lesbian families have have a fundamental right to equal treatment under the law and we support our representatives in government when they support us.
There is no place in America for separate but equal and a majority of Americans now support full legal marriage rights for all.
Don't be on the wrong side of history.
Sincerely,
(your name)
(your address)
