Application form for potential PhD candidates at Leiden Law School |

If you want to do a PhD (doctorate) at Leiden Law School (i.e. the faculty of law of Universiteit
Leiden), please complete this form in accordance with the explanatory notes provided below
and see how to become an external PhD candidate at Leiden Law School
Persons who have already been awarded a doctorate degree will not be allowed to submit another
dissertation. For that reason it will not be possible to apply for a PhD program at Leiden Law School.
When completing this application form, you will be asked to upload various documents. Please be
sure you have scans or electronic versions of these documents available on your computer before
you start completing this form. The documents you will have to upload are: CV, scanned copies of your diplomas and grade lists, a brief outline of your research
and your proposed PhD research plan (max. upload 1500 KB per document).
Questions marked with * are compulsory.
Please note that in some departments of Leiden Law School you will have to pay a fee to become a PhD candidate.
When this form has been completed, the Graduate School will first see if all formal requirements are fullfilled. The
supervisor(s) will also be asked if they are satisfied with the quantity and the quality of the substantive research texts.
The aim is that you will hear from Leiden Law School within 2 months. |

It is compulsory, unless the candidate is a native speaker to submit proven English language proficiency, demonstrated by way of a TOEFL test (overall score of 100 Internet-based), or IELTS test (overall score of 7.0). In addition to the above-mentioned overall English test scores, minimum band scores of IELTS 6.0 (TOEFL 20) are required for all sub-sections.
This requirement does not apply if you have:
- completed your education in Canada (except Quebec), USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
- an International Baccalaureate.

Please be aware that Leiden Law School does not provide funding to external PHD candidates
(i.e. PhD candidates who are not employed at Leiden Law School). So external candidates will
have to make their own arrangements for the funding of their research and living costs.
Sometimes external funding possibilities can be explored together with the supervisor(s). From
time to time openings for a paid position as employed PhD candidate are advertised at the
University job vacancy web page.
Please note that PhD research normally takes three to five years, and should result in a PhD
thesis of less than 100.000 words, consisting of several (previously published or submitted)
articles and/or several chapters.
